Let me say also something:

Theoretically, I agree with developers: having a test case would be nice.

But practically:
1. There's a patch for the last 1,5 years.
2. A lot of people confirm that the patch is working.
3. There is noone who reports any issues with the patch.
4. The bug is serious, and both game and bug are highly voted.
5. There is noone willing to write a test case.
6. The crashes are random so it's probably not even possible to write a test
case.

Under these circumstances, I think that there's only one options to solve the
bug: accept the patch.
All the other options are just making excuses - as we all can see they just
lead to prolonging the solution and to unhappy users.
