As Gentoo doesn't yet provide wine-1.2_rc4, I created my own overlay and ebuild
to use the SC2 patch plus that version.  The sc2 patch mentioned in this thread
plus the rc4 source and kernel 2.6.32-gentoo-r1 does compile and get beyond the
login screen.

wine-1.2_rc4 stock with kernel 2.6.32-gentoo r1 did not work (or any version of
wine after 1.1.43) and exhibited the same error message as this thread started
with.

I will have to test to see if this breaks other applications I use, but this is
tentatively good news.  It confirms that the sc2 patch works around it - but
not if that breaks other applications.
