kgrab reports that it can provide the image/bmp format, but in practice it
doesn't seem able to do this. I've tried pasting into Wine, a simple test
program I wrote, and the GIMP. None of them were able to get any data.

Wine shouldn't crash in this case, though. I guess our error handling is not
very good when we're trying to convert one format to another.
