Tried the full game (patched to 1.07, a no-cd crack was used, without DirectX
installation) with Wine-1.1.40. The game showed the same issue as described in
the original description: it shows only a black screen with the mouse cursor,
sound is playing etc.
I have also lots of 'fixme:d3d:transform_projection >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
GL_INVALID_VALUE (0x501) from glOrtho @ state.c / 3898' in the console.

A possible workaround that solved the problem for me: I de-selected the 'Full
Screen' option in the config utility (Setup.exe). Now the game starts up
without issues both in fullscreen and virtual-desktop mode, and running fine.

Can anyone else confirm this "trick" makes the game playable?

The demo version contains Starforce and I couldn't test it.
