I would just like to add that this worked for me, but after a few unsuccessful
tries. According to the support staff att getsatisfaction.com there were some
temporary connection problems to facebook that seem to have been resolved now. 

FWIW i run Spotify on a 64-bit Ubuntu install (karmic at the time), and never
had to use any workarund to connect.
