I have tested the latest Kindle version and it is not working but the error is
not the same. Details:

* Kindle app: 6540984 bytes, latest from Amazon (May/17/2010)
* Wine configured as Win98 
* Ubuntu 9.10
* Wine 1.1.44
* See attachment "Kindle installation log" for details

The application is installed but the following message is displayed at the end
of installation process:

"Kindle for PC ins Installed, but failed to launch. Please contact your
administrator".

If you try to run it from menu the application is showed at task bar but it
disappears after some seconds. From command line it is possible to see an error
related to timezone information (see attachment Kindle execution log)
