What is the in-game shader detail option set to? With shader detail set to high
and directx hardware level set to use version 8.x by using `-dxlevel 80` the
same artifacts you describe occur on native windows xp. I cannot remember
exactly but I believe this is repeatable on Windows 7 as well and this is
independent of the graphics manufacturer.

My guess is that the metal material shading is enabled by selecting high detail
shaders option but that the necessary functionality to render the effect is not
present in source's directx 8 support, hence the purple rendering issue, and
thus is not the fault of wine.

This does not address the hang issue.
