I connected an oscilloscope to the serial port while running HyperTerminal on
Wine 1.3.6.  I noticed that characters were being sent out of the port while a
key was held down, but they were not echoed back to the screen.

While holding a key down to get a good trace on the 'scope I received a burst
of characters on the screen.  I then found that this burst occurs approximately
every three seconds.
