Unfortunately, I can't answer your question.

After much tweaking, I eventually managed to run CIV IV. I unfortunately don't
remember how I did it. I think I must have tried every solution ever mentioned
in CIV IV pages on the wine site. And some combination must have worked.

I will not have enough time for testing with a fresh install of a more recent
version of wine.
