It seems to be a transparent window, with compiz enabled
(System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects->Extra in Ubuntu 9.10) the
screen doesn't go black, but shades in a tone of gray.

Furthermore, the arrow issue only happens if, after selecting the arrow tool,
you hover the mouse over a text box. In a blank slide it works fine.
