I had the same problem; after the 4.0.0.1 patch WoW.exe crashed when trying to
download the 4.0.1 patch. I upgraded both wine and linux kernel but it didn't
help much although a fresh wine install changed the crash into an error
message.

The workaround was to execute the Launcher.exe instead of WoW.exe to download
the patch. After that WoW.exe started working as well.
