The error dialogue is no longer present with Wine-1.3.5: a Direct3D driver
selection screen is shown instead, where you can choose the D3D driver and the
screen resolution.
After pressing on <OK> the game will start; provided you checked the 'never use
DirectSound' option in the previous menu, otherwise the game will crash.

Please, check again the game using a more recent version of Wine.

Nvidia 7600 / driver 256.53 / clean Wine install here.
