Game does

0009:Call KERNEL32.CreateFileA(009ff478
"C:\\windows\\Fonts\\Arial.ttf",80000000,00000003,0032f814,00000003,00000080,00000000)
ret=0058bd5e
0009:Ret  KERNEL32.CreateFileA() retval=ffffffff ret=0058bd5e

and crashes almost immediately thereafter.

winetricks corefonts works around the problem.
