Not much has changed since my original post, now using Wine-1.3.26. Terminal
output is the same, except that the lines
err:alsa:wine_snd_pcm_recover underrun occurred
have disappeared in current Wine.

The game runs reasonably well without native dlls, except that audio is not

With native dmusic dlls both music (requires Timidity) and sound effects can be
heard. However, music always cuts in half whenever a sound effects is playing
(e.g. you pick up an object in the game).
The biggest problem is that when you enter a certain room in the game sound
begins looping and the game becomes unresponsive.
Using native dsound.dll used to work around the freezing issue until
Wine-1.3.25. Since then it has no effect.

I willingly provide further logs if needed. I can also attach a saved game that
leads you directly to the ominous scene.
