On my NVidia 9400 Mac mini, the patch even degrades the situation: starting
from the bogus and almost black screen, pressing ESC to enter the menu
incompletely draws the menu screen.  It is correctly drawn without patch.
No such change was observed with Intel graphics.
The Mac too needs "VertexShaderMode"="none"
