This happens reliably on my ubuntu 10.04 i7 buildbot machine:

vartype.c:4847: Test failed: hres=0x0, type=8 (should be VT_BSTR), *bstr='F'
vartype.c:4849: Test failed: hres=0x0, type=8 (should be VT_BSTR), *bstr='F'

It also appears to happen reliably on Solaris; see

The tests in question have to do with localization, it seems.
FWIW, my box is running with LANG=en_US.UTF-8.
