This seems to be a video playback issue. After renaming the Scrapland/Video
folder the game runs fine.
That folder contains some avi cutscenes and some intro videos (with .vds
extension).

Moreover, this bug affects some Windows versions too (see e.g. [1]). I tried
setting various Windows versions in wine (namely XP, 2000, 98, NT 4.0), but
that didn't help.
On Windows ffdshow seem to be interfering with the in-game video player [2],
but I don't know if this can be helpful.
