RESOLVED!!!

The error occurred after upgrading OpenSUSE from 11.4 to 12.1, with previously
working SU8 under Wine 1.3.34.

The 12.1 upgrade, downgraded Wine to 1.3.30

After a fair bit of footering around, the issue was resolved by uninstalling
Wine 1.3.30, deleting $HOME/.wine, installing Wine 1.3.35, and reinstalling SU8
as per instructions at:
http://sites.google.com/site/sketchupsage/problems/linux
(also installed vcrun2008, and kept new ie8 rather than wine version).

A lot of the issue seemed to involve failed install of ie8 - once this worked,
SU8 seemed to be OK.

Also installed Google Earth v6.1, which appears to work with SU8 as intended.

Only gripe is it appears not to run from the KDE4.6 Application Launcher, only
from terminal or Dolphin file-manager context (Google Earth does run from
Launcher).
