All functions well at start-up. The log file flooding only starts when I push
the hotsync button on the cradle. This apparently triggers the first
communication to the serial port, waking up the hotsync program.

Hitting the hotsync button on the cradle should yield a pop-up once it is
detected that the Palm hotsync button is pushed. That pop-up does not come. The
Palm pilot is searching for a connection, but does not give a message that the
connection is found.
