Mass Effect installer crashes on executing DataSetup.exe

My Mass Effect installation fails with Wine 1.3.23 nearly at the end of the
installation process. The setup already executed a DX setup (because the
version Wine claims to support (March 2009) is too old (Mass Effect wants
October 2009)) and vcredist (you don't get asked). Then the installer shows
"Executing 'D:\data\DataSetup.exe'" and after a few seconds you get the ntdll
error and subsequent crash.

Please note, that my Wine installation is _with_ debugging symbols, still I get
this log.
