OK, I've upgraded alsa-lib and alsa-utils to the current versions.  (1.0.24.1
and 1.0.24.2, respectively.)  No change.

I did manage to figure out why Unreal was crashing: the hardware acceleration
setting was "full" by default.  Given how many places explicitly said to set it
to "emulation", I had assumed (yeah, I know) that "emulation" had become the
default.  (Also because many of those pages were pretty old.)  It still pops
relatively frequently in-game though.

And that setting has no effect on the test run, either.
