The originally reported problem as well as that strange error message have gone
away with Wine-1.3.23. The problem has been fixed recently (between 1.3.22 and
1.3.23).

After a quick glance, the game works perfectly (cinematics, gameplay, video,
audio).

One more note: the corefonts package needs to be installed otherwise the game
quits shortly after started...but that's a different story.

I'm marking this bug report as FIXED.
