I have exactly the same issue using Ubuntu 11.04 with Wine 1.3.23.

Word is very slow so that I have to wait seconds until it shows what I am
typing. But the performance seems to depend on which view-mode is used:
View->Normal is much quicker than View-Layout (sorry don't know how the menu
names are in English exactly...
