Fortuneately I can close this as not a bug....

Turns out that wine 1.3.15 works of the box without directx9 then with (as
previously required).

After I created a new prefix and reinstalled the game without installing
Directx9 from winetricks the game seems to run fine.

Thanks for any time you may have spent looking into the problem.
