Tried TF2 on a similar machine to my own

(MSI GX720, Nvidia Geforce 9600M 4GB Ram, Core 2 Duo at 2.4GHZ ubuntu 10.04)

Won't launch without gameoverlayrenderer disabled.

This, I feel, rules out any configuration issues with my laptop.
