which sound card does you have ?

For ac97 codec and HDA codec , the alsa sound card drivers have the following
controls

1) "Capture Volume"
2) "Capture Switch"
3) "Mic Boost"
4) 'Mic Boost (+20dB)'
5) "Mic Playback Volume"
6) "Mic Playback Switch"

There are also various kind of mic

"Front Mic", "Rear Mic", "Ext Mic", "Int Mic" annd "Dig Mic"

and other inputs

"Line" , "CD", "Aux", "Video", "Stereo Mix", "Mono Mix"


selectors which allow user to select the "source" of the capture device

1) Capture Source
2) Input Source 



e.g. audacity 1.3.x (win version) allow you to select which "Capture/Input
source" but the linux version of audacity does not allow you to select which
"Capture/Input source"

running audacity in wine does not show the correct "Capture/Input Source"
