Thank you for this. I suspected that the problem being lack of support for ADS
was too simple too be true, but it needed ruling out. I still wonder about the
possiblity of transient forks during authentication (very unlikely) and about
Steam itself (less unlikely, but still unlikely); at least I get to shut up
about it.

I think given your other evidence, it's clear that the limiting bug is with
Wine right now. Is there an obvious difference between the working copy and the
non-working copy?
