Many applications when installed have their shortcut properties set to make the
working directory where the location of the installed files are, which is why
they don't crash on Windows.

When you run an application outside of it's installation directory it may
assume the above and then crash due to lack of error handling.

Sounds invalid to me.  If you wanted to, you could test the theory on windows
by starting the game using cmd, from c:\ for example.
