@ema: For me the performance gain was at least +50% fps, in other situations
more like +100% fps in WoW. Unfortunately, the patch was never really stable
for me, it crashed after a few minutes.

One thing I noted was the graphics card I had back then (a Nvidia GT 8800) did
stay in power saving mode (half clock speed) most of the time. I first thought
it was a bug in the driver, so I did override the power saving mode to make it
stay at full clock speed all the time - which didn't give me a single fps more
(standing in a crowded area in Stormwind).

After the patch I noticed the graphics card went to full clock speed by itself
immediatly, and further it was actually getting hot. So at this time (about a
year ago) the frame rate in WoW direct3d mode was clearly cpu bound, and ae's
patch did help to alleviate this.

Another data point is that going from an Q9550 to an i7 2600k @4.7 GHz did
increase the frame rate noticeably. I have no exact measurements, but it is
clearly in the +50% range too.
