brew does indeed have an override. the issue is that OSX no longer ships Xcode
with GCC-4.2, and it is a difficult and painful hack to install an earlier
Xcode version. it's entirely Apple's fault, but it does make life somewhat
difficult for OSX developers, as running multiple versions of Xcode side by
side is not straightforward.
