Ok, just set up 1.3.29 and tried again, and yes, same behavior as before.

However, I now believe the d3d "fixme" messages have nothing to do with the
empty map screen problem.  Once again, when I installed PGII, I got the d3d
notes and empty map, but after copying over the MAP directory from the CD (as I
noted in an earlier post), the game plays fine and I still see the same d3d
messages.

I don't know if there's a problem with the installer not copying files over, or
the game not finding the right path to the CD to find the map data, but it
doesn't look like a d3d bug at this point.
