I updated last week to Kubuntu 12.04 LTS Beta on my laptop.  Stock install with
Noveau drivers (have NOT tried Nvidia drivers yet). Wine 1.4 and Sketchup 8. 
Desktop effects are on.

Mouse selections are working for me now.  Happy so far.
