I did an in-place upgrade from Mint 13 to Mint 14, then opened Rosetta Stone
again. This time, the error message was gone and the microphone configuration
screen displayed as it should, but there were no microphones detected. I added
a libalsa package with the package manager, and set sound to alsa in
winetricks, but still no microphome. With the Synaptics package manager, I
removed Wine 1.4. To my surprise, at the same time that Synaptics was removing
wine 1.4 it was also apparently downloading updates to wine (?). I checked
winecfg and found that there was now wine 1.5.18 installed and my installation
of Rosetta Stone was still there. I tried RS again, but still no mic. I
rebooted and tried Rosetta Stone again and this time there were two microphones
listed and it worked perfectly. Not only that, but I opened a Play on Linux
installation of Chessmaster that previously had an audio output problem and now
it worked OK as well. I have no idea what caused the problems or what fixed
them. I hope you can find some rhyme or reason in my experience. I am happy.
Thanks for your work.
