In order to attempt to sign in, you must have a Windows Live ID.  You also must
have riched20 installed.  When I attempt to sign in, it then tells me I must
install a newer version of messenger in order to continue.  Does this also
happen for you?

When I then let the new version download, it complains that the installer can't
be started, due to not being connected to the internet, then crashes.

In other words, I can't reproduce the exact issue you're pointing out.  Please
give instructions on how you install it and reproduce it.
