I am experiencing the same symptoms. OpenSuse 12.1, x86_64, fresh install,
wine-1.3.30, kindle 1.8.3

The crash says 
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x7855753a
(thread 0009), starting debugger...

Backtrace is pointing to msvcr90 (full stderr in the attachment).

Deleting the manifest file does not help.
