If the game used to work with previous Wine versions, please perform a
regression test:

What video card and driver are you using?
I can't reproduce the problem with the GOG.com version of the game. Tested with
Wine 1.5.8 on Fedora 17 (32 bit), Nvidia gfx card with the proprietary driver
295.59.
