No, that's not what I'm saying.  Here's a little matrix:

Fresh prefix, demo: Works perfectly (except for a weirdness on shutdown)

Steam prefix, demo: Works perfectly, but installer complains about missing "AGP
acceleration"

Steam prefix, steam version: Doesn't work
