I can reproduce the problem with the demo version of Alien Shooter, but not
with the full version of the game (available in the Alien Shooter Gold Pack).
Interestingly, both the demo and the full version claim that they're the 1.2
version of the game, yet, the problem is not present with the full version of
the game.
Both the open source Nouveau and the proprietary Nvidia driver (295.59) show
the reported problem.

These messages seem to be relevant, as they're present only with demo version:
>fixme:d3d8:d3d8_device_SetCurrentTexturePalette iface 0x11e1c0, palette_idx 1852404340 unimplemented.
err:d3d_surface:d3dfmt_p8_init_palette This code should never get entered for
DirectDraw!, expect problems
The messages begin to fill the console as soon as a light source comes into
view during gameplay.

Karaluh, can you confirm that the problem is reproducible on your system with
this demo:
