Personally, my goal is to support symlinks.  I use them all the time and there
are a variety of Windows applications that get upset about it.  I'm not really
excited about it, but when I get some time I'm going to talk with the kernel
folks about adding support for an atomic replacement of a directory with a
symlink.  You can already atomically replace a directory with a directory, so I
imagine that they won't be too resistant to the idea.
