I get a very similar error when trying to launch Asheron's Call.  The error
occurs when the launcher is trying to patch the game.

err:wininet:HTTP_HttpOpenRequestW Unable to escape
string!(L"/acpatch/2006051701_0605171155/all/HelpContent/ALLEGIANCE
TOOLS.ksml") (-2147467261)

If I do a google search for the "err:wininet:HTTP_HttpOpenRequestW Unable to
escape string!" part I find that several other games are running into the same
issue.

FWIW, I can copy the patched files from a Windows installation and the game
works perfectly.
