I tested the demo version and it can be started normally in Wine 1.5.4 using
built-in msxml3.dll.
For completeness, I could reproduce the originally reported crash with Wine
versions 1.2.3, 1.3.5. 

What bothers me is that the launcher hits bug #30181 on my system: it crashes
fairly often when some advertisement is about to pop up in the launcher. This
should be considered a different issue.
