I found a work around for this problem.

When I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to mint 13 I had the 64 bit OS but I was
downloading and compiling the 32 bit wine.

I've not managed to get 32 bit wine to compile under mint so I had the default
wine from the repo which is the 64 bit wine. When I recreated the prefix it
creatd a 64 bit wrapper and there appears to be major problems with it compared
to the 32 bit.

I installed unbuntu 10.04 alongside mint and attempted to run steam but it was
telling me that it couldn't run the 64 bit version under 32 bit wine.

Recreating the prefix, ME worked perfect under the 32 bit wine so I booted up
into mint and with the 32 bit prefix ME ran fine in that also.

So the problem like I said was caused by the 64 bit prefix. This may also be
the cause of other issues I've noticed in other steam games I have.
