Confirmed on 1.5.12:

On the GOG version, the game offers to install DirectX 9.0c.  If you say yes,
it works fine.  If you say no, then the game crashes on startup due to missing
xact dll.

If you winetricks xact_june2010 you get a different crash complaining about d3d
not being complete.

If you also winetricks d3dcompiler_43, then the game works.
