ae, could you create an updated patch that can be applied to the current git?

This might be a first step towards a "clean" implementation, just like Tom
said. Even if it's just a hack only covering a subset of the relevant
functions... it could possibly be improved, expanded and generalized.

For some users, a patch might also work better than employing the LD_PRELOAD
path to inject rgl functionality.
