The demo doesn't crash, but instead complains about missing DirectX 9.0c.
Testing reveals that the application expects D3D_SDK_VERSION = 0x80000020 (wine
has 0x20). After changing that value & rebuilding, the game fails on a call to
D3DXCreateTextureFromFileInMemoryEx, and then complains as before.
