As Stefan said in comment #11, you may be hitting the Nvidia caching.

I'll test whenever I can get gentoo to build non-broken wine. If you can test
again, try:
$ mv ~/.nv ~/.nv.bak
$ ln -s /dev/null /.nv

then try the game again
