As stated in comment 9 the GOG version comes with art_cache_size=8, I raised it
to 1048 and it didn't crash for me in wine 1.3.22, 1.4.1, 1.6 and 1.7.8.

I also tested in Windows XP (art_cache_size=1048) and the game is playable too.

So unfortunately I'm not able to see the original issue.
