This is not a regression, nor is it a fatal bug. 
After several stops and starts, including re-booting, I got the program to run. 
Timeout errors occur when the program is being set up for the first time, and a
one-time message such as "search all e-mails now" needs to pop up, just once. 
The timeout error and program end occur before that. Re-starting the program
three times does the trick, as each time clears out one of the pop-up messages.
