I verified same situation with the following versions :

wine 1.5.23
winetricks 20120912
playonlinux 4.2.1
OpenSuSE 12.3
oFFICE 2010

The workaround actually works, i've created the Recent directory in 
~/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/Office2010/drive_c/users/xxxxx
