winegstreamer problem confirmed.  
To help the next person that finds this bug, a solution:
$ winecfg
"Libraries"
from 'New override for library', select 'winegstreamer', then click 'Add'
in 'Existing overrides', find the new 'winegstreamer' entry at the bottom,
click 'Edit...' and in the 'Edit Override' dialog, select '(*) Disable'.

Transcendence 1.1 now starts; no audio glitches noticed during a ten-minute
game.
